Commander of Corps says study needed along Missouri River

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (WNAX) – The Commander of the Northwest Division of the Army Corps of Engineers says a study of flood control measures is needed along the Missouri River below Gavins Point Dam.

Brigadier General Peter Helmlinger says the flooding this spring pointed to the problems along the river.

Helmlinger says the river now doesn’t have the capacity to carry the water flowing into the system below the dams.

Helmlinger says levees along the lower river may have to be modified.

Helmlinger took part in a subcommittee hearing of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee in North Sioux City, chaired by South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds.
