Man crashes stolen car after high speed chase into Sturgis

STURGIS, S.D. (KBHB) – Police say a man stole a car outside the Fort Meade V.A. hospital, and led police on a high speed chase into Sturgis Tuesday morning.

Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says they were notified of the individual after he allegedly stole a Tahoe from the Fort Meade parking lot. The man entered a Sturgis at a high rate of speed and ended up losing control on Lazelle Street.

VanDewater says the man left a considerable amount of damage in his wake, including a destroyed light pole, which fell into and damaged Radiant Salon on Lazelle Street.

The salon received damaged to their door and sign. Salon owner Holly Petrocco says when the driver hit the pole, he hit it so hard, he shoved the base of it into the salon and it tipped over backward.

There are also reports of damage in the former Massa Berry Parking Lot. VanDewater says it’s a miracle nobody was hurt.

VanDewater expects charges to be filed against the individual for what took place inside Sturgis city limits.

Due to privacy laws, the man’s identity is not being released.
