No horse racing this spring in Fort Pierre

FORT PIERRE, S.D. (DRG News) – For the first time in 70 years, there will not be horse races in Fort Pierre this year.

Fort Pierre race track manager Shane Kramme (cray-me) says the Verendrye Benovolent Association has decided not to host races this year due to lack of funding and several other considerations. He says it was a difficult decision, but the VBA board believes it’s in the best interest of the organization, community, South Dakota horse people and participating equine athletes.

Kramme says whether or not horse races are held next year in Fort Pierre has yet to be determined.

Horse racing is held in two South Dakota towns, Fort Pierre and Aberdeen. Last year, races were held four days in Fort Pierre and another four days in Aberdeen. The status of racing in Aberdeen this year hasn’t been determined yet.

Kramme says the VBA has enjoyed bringing the races to Fort Pierre over the years and thanks the horsemen, sponsors and race attendees for their support.
