Two suspects in custody following shooting death in Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KBHB) – Rapid City police say they have two suspects in custody in relation to the shooting death of a teen late Tuesday night.

In a release, police say Andre Martinez and Cole Waters, both 19 and from Rapid City, were detained Wednesday.

Police say the arrests are in connection to the death of 17-year-old Emmanuel Hinton of Box Elder. Hinton died at Rapid City Regional Hospital overnight.

Police say they received a report of a male subject who had just been shot shortly after 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. The reporting party was inside a vehicle, which was transporting the victim to the hospital.

Police say witnesses indicate the shooting took place in an alleyway behind the 700 block of Blaine Avenue.

Investigators believe the shooting is the result of attempted robbery in which the occupants of the vehicle made contact with two males in the alleyway.

Police say Waters was taken into custody voluntarily and Martinez was taken was into custody at his residence following a brief callout of the Rapid City/Pennington County Special Response Team.

Authorities say the investigation into the shooting is open and ongoing and charges of homicide and robbery are pending against Martinez and Waters.
