Donald E. Hartman was born on April 8, 1950, in Miles City, Montana, to Merle and Virginia (Baker) Hartman.  Don was the oldest of three children.  He spent his early childhood living in Yakima, WA.  The family then moved to Watertown, SD.  Don attended school in Watertown, graduating from Watertown High School in 1968.

On August 5, 1971, Don married the love of his life, Anne Lichty, in Miller, SD.  The couple had their first child, Shane, the day after they were married. The family then moved to Loves Park, Illinois, where he worked for Warner-Lambert Company and Rockford Drop Forge Company.  Don graduated from Lake Area Vocational Technical School in Watertown on May 26, 1972. In 1972, their second son was born in Huron, SD.  In 1975 the family moved to Aurora, Colorado, where Don worked at Maritin Marietta Company and other machine shops using his skills as a manual machinist.

Don was always searching for a career to be passionate about.  His love for Harley-Davidson led him to the passion he was searching for.  After moving his family back to Aberdeen in 1988, Don attended Northern State University, graduating with a business management degree, graduating in 1995.  In 1997, he purchased and renovated a closed business and started Maverick Motorcycle Service, which he owned and operated until his passing.

Don’s second love of his life was definitely servicing and repairing Harley-Davidson motorcycles and building several motorcycles of various types to sell and for himself.  Don always made sure his immediate family members had a motorcycle of their own to carry on his passion and bring joy to their lives. Aside from Don’s love of Harley-Davidsons, he also enjoyed collecting Zippo Lighters, spending time with friends at the “shop,” reading, hunting, fishing, collecting Die-Cast Model Cars, and riding his Harley to Sturgis and vacationing while riding cross country.

Grateful for having shared Don’s life is his wife Anne of 52 years; son Shane of Greeley, CO; two sisters: Connie Kieso of Watertown, SD, and Robbin (Nels) Christensen of Wabasso, MN; six grandchildren: Shayna Hartman, Dillon Erickson, Justin Hartman, Brittany (Logan) Kirschenmann, Jesse Hartman, and Khari Keifer; six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Theresa Lichty, Pam (Craig) VanZee, and Pauline Hicks all of Miller, SD; and many nieces and nephews. Don had a special bond with his nephew JJ Kieso.

Don was preceded in death by his son Sean Hartman; his parents Merle and Virginia; his mother and father-in-law Edward and Dorothy Lichty; and his nephew John.
