Grebner Grabs Crown in North Dakota

West Fargo, ND (NSUWolves.com) [DAY 3] – The Northern State swim team maintained their hold on fifth place in the team standings at the 2023 NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday with a total of 222 team points. The Wolves were once again led by the pair of Lilly Grebner and Lauren Forsyth who both earned a spot in the top-3 of the 200-yard butterfly, with Grebner winning her third conference title of the meet.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • During the morning session Haley Osborne set a new season-best time (5:15.87) in the 500-yard freestyle to advance to the B-Final, while Hannah Rodts recorded a new personal-best time (5:27.97) to advance to the C-Final
  • In the 100-yard backstroke preliminaries, Maddie Gonzales recorded a season-best time of 58.58 to advance to the evening’s B-Final, another swimmer of note was Stella Bullis who also set a season-best time in the event after hitting the wall in 1:04.66
  • In the 200-yard butterfly preliminaries, Hannah Kiernan notched a new season-best with a time of 2:22.57 in the event
  • In the evening session Osborne recorded a top-10 finish in the 500-yard freestyle, winning the B-Final and finishing ninth overall in the event with another season-best time of 5:09.50; Rodts finished 24th overall in the event with a time of 5:28.03 in the C-Final
  • Gonzales turned in a 12th place overall finish in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 58.63 in the B-Final
  • Mayson Sheldon was the lone Wolf to compete in the 100-yard breaststroke in the NSIC Championships, she advanced to the C-Final in tonight’s session where she finished 19th overall with a time of 1:08.88
  • Northern took center stage in the 200-yard butterfly as Lilly Grebner (2:05.01) claimed her third conference title of the meet and Lauren Forsyth (2:09.03) joined her with all-conference honors and a third place finish
  • Kiernan improved on a season-best time set in the 200-yard butterfly preliminaries with a time of 2:21.95 in the event’s C-Final in the evening session
  • Northern State closed day three at the NSIC Championships with a top-10 finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay, finishing ninth place with a time of 7:56.17

Day four of the conference championships was once again highlighted by an event title by Lilly Grebner (100-yard IM) as she completed the sweep of the three individual medley events during the meet. At the conclusion of the meet Grebner was named the NSIC Freshman of the Year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Haley Osborne (53.40) and Ali Jones (58.67) set new season-best times in the preliminaries of the 100-yard freestyle, while Brianna Back set a new personal-best with a time of 54.81
  • Maddie Gonzales (2:05.47), Haley Osborne (2:12.17), Georgy Turner (2:16.01), Hannah Kiernan (2:17.29), and Stella Bullis (2:20.25) all recorded new season-best times in the preliminaries of the 200-yard backstroke
  • In the 200-yard breaststroke preliminaries Mayson Sheldon set a season-best mark of 2:35.02 and Back recorded her second personal-best time of session with a time of 2:39.65
  • Lilly Grebner won her fourth conference title of the meet with a victory in the 100-yard IM, hitting the wall in a time of 57.83 to sweep the three individual medley events at the NSIC Championships
  • With a win in the C-Final of the 100-yard freestyle, Osborne improved her season-best time to 52.82 and finished 17th overall in the event; Delaney Ryken also competed in the C-Final of the event and finished 22nd overall with a time of 54.46
  • Gonzales reached the podium with a sixth place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 2:06.43 in the A-Final; Osborne once again improved her season-best prelim time with a 17th place overall finish and time of 2:10.01 in the C-Final
  • Mia Fursedonne also competed in the C-Final of the 200-yard backstroke, where she finished 21st overall with a season-best time of 2:12.42
  • Sheldon finished 22nd overall in the 200-yard breaststroke with another season-best time of 2:33.78 in the C-Final
  • Northern State closed the 2023 NSIC Championships with a podium finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the team of Ryken, Forsyth, Osborne, and Grebner hit the wall in a season-best time of 3:33.00

Northern State will await the announcement of NCAA Championship selections on Tuesday, February 21. Currently Lilly Grebner holds NCAA B-Cut times in three events, the 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard IM, and 400-yard IM. The NCAA Championships are set to take place March 8-11 in Indianapolis.
