Mary Lewis, 78

Brandon, SD: Mary Jane Lewis passed away on the morning of September 18, 2024, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Mary’s life at the Britton Area Event Center on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.

Mary was born on August 4, 1946, in Britton, SD to Jane (Robbins) and Colin Harris. Mary and her older brother, Colin (Chip) grew up in an apartment in their parents’ hotel, the Glacier Trail. Mary’s father passed away when she was 11 years old. When she was in high school, Mary had to manage the hotel by herself when her mom was working as a nurse and her brother was away at college.

Mary met her husband, Ron Lewis, in grade school and the two went to their first school dance together in the 8th grade. Mary and Ron were married on June 24, 1966, and had two daughters, Beth and Pam.

Mary graduated from Britton High School in 1964 and earned a degree from the Aberdeen School of Commerce. She worked as a legal assistant in Britton, SD, a middle school administrative assistant in New London, WI, and a receptionist at Southeast Technical College in Sioux Falls, SD. After retiring, Mary and Ron split their time between Sioux Falls and Fort Myers. In Florida, Mary enjoyed walks on the beach and boat rides, especially when they involved a stop at the dog beach.

Mary was the family communicator and peacemaker. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandkids. They camped, traveled, and spent many summer days together at Lake Poinsett. Mary liked getting together with her friends and hosting parties with Ron at the lake cabin. The Beatles’ lyric “I get by with a little help from my friends” was her motto and fittingly her ringtone. She also loved animals, and they loved her right back! Mary’s dog, Piper, and cat, Tiki, were always by her side.

She will be missed by her husband Ron Lewis of 58 years; their daughters, Beth (Sam Trebilcock) of Sioux Falls, SD and Pam (Aaron Maag) of Fort Myers, FL; grandchildren, Ellie and Ben Trebilcock and Jane, Henry, and Colin Maag; Ron’s siblings and their families; and many wonderful friends.

Memorials may be directed to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.
