NCAA DII Tourney – Round 1

WSC

MSU 26-9

  • After a defensive 1st half that saw the teams go to the locker room tied at three, it was a miscue on offense for Wayne that gave MSU the lead & they would take that momentum and run away for the win, 26-9. On the opening possession of the 2nd half, QB Nick Bohn mishandled a snap and covered up the football 26 yards back to surrender a safety. MSU seized the momentum, though, getting a TD drive after the free kick and scoring 23 unanswered points before the Wildcats got a TD w/ just 71 seconds to play. Mankato ran it 43x for 214y & 3TD while completing just four passes for 73 yards in cold & windy conditions. Wayne ran it 37x for 87y & Bohn threw for 129y & a TD. Mankato will head to the CO School of Mines in the next round of the tourney.

WSU

BSU 31-7

  • The Beavers & Warriors were scoreless at the break, but BSU got the offense rolling through the arm of veteran Brandon Alt in the 2nd half as the 6th-year QB finished w/ 4TD tosses – three in the 3Q – and 250 yards passing in a 31-7 win. BSU dominated the 3rd frame, 24-0. Winona hurt themselves by losing fumbles on back-to-back plays, as they were only out-gained by 17 yards. Winona picked off Alt 3x and recovered a Beaver fumble, but they didn’t convert enough of those chances. Brendan Beaulieu had all four TD catches w/ 5r in all for 138y. WSU ran it 41x for 177y & had 186y passing w/ the lone TD coming on a run by QB Trevor Paulsen. BSU will visit top seed in the region – Angelo State – on Saturday, 11/26, in San Angelo, Texas.
