CARY, NC (angelosports.com) – The Angelo State baseball team’s record-breaking season finished with a win in the final game of the year as the Rams defeated Rollins 6-5 to claim the 2023 NCAA Division II National Championship for the first time in program history.
The Rams end the championship season with a 56-9 overall record, setting both the ASU and Lone Star Conference win records while earning the first men’s national championship in ASU’s NCAA era.
After two scoreless innings, the Rams brought in the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning as Jacob Guerrero singled up the middle to score Justin Harris from second for the early lead.
The Tars answered back in the fourth, scoring on a double down the right field line to tie the game.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Rams regained the lead as Guerrero cleared the left field fence with a two-run home run, scoring Thomas Cain who hit a two-out single in the previous at bat.
The Tars got one run back in the sixth inning, scoring on a single to make it 3-2 before back-to-back strikeouts stranded two runners for Rollins.
Aaron Munson started on the mound for the Rams, tossing five 1/3 innings with two runs on five hits to go with four strikeouts. He finished the season with an 11-2 overall record.
The Rams extended their lead in the seventh inning as Tripp Clark hit a two-run double to left field to bring home Cain and Harris and give ASU a 5-2 advantage.
Throwing in relief was Austin Teel who tossed one 2/3 innings with a hit and two strikeouts.
The Rams put one more run on the board in the eighth as Harris singled to left field, scoring Jordan Williams on the play.
Rollins fell short of the comeback in the top of the ninth inning, putting three runs across before a strikeout from Kade Bragg sealed the victory for the Rams.
The Rams landed four players on the all-tournament team in Kamden Kelton, Bragg, Harris, and Munson while Munson was named the tournament MVP.
