NSU Softball Has 2-2 Weekend at Home

The Northern State University softball team split with the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday from Moccasin Creek Complex. The Wolves tallied a victory in game one, however suffered a run-rule loss in game two.

 

Game One

HOW IT HAPPENED

·        Northern State scored first with two runs in the bottom of the third on a single to center by Makenzie Merritt, plating Emily Charchuk, and a first-and-third steal play scoring Ashley Fauske

·        The Cougars quickly knotted the game up in the top of the fourth, however the Wolves were not done

·        NSU put together a 5-run, 6-hit fourth inning, taking a 7-2 lead

·        Charchuk, Jessi Hernandez, and Chanel Siebenthal tallied the first runs of the inning on a base clearing double by Emma Terveer

·        Rachel Reinke stepped to the plate the following at-bat and belted a 2-run homerun to right center, sending the outfield crowd scattering

·        Wolves starter Meghan Anderson held the Cougars scoreless in the final three innings, grabbing her tenth win of the 2021 season

·        In total, Northern recorded seven runs on 12 hits, without giving up an error defensively

Game Two

HOW IT HAPPENED

·        It was all Sioux Falls in the second game as the Cougars tallied four runs in the fourth and ten in the fifth

·        Chanel Siebenthal singled through the left side scoring Rachel Reinke in the fourth and Elly Smith launched a solo homerun in the fifth for the Wolves two runs

·        Northern tallied two runs on three hits and suffered one error on defense

·        Elyse Cuttic suffered her fourth loss of the season giving up eight earned runs in 4.1 innings of work

On a windy day from Moccasin Creek Softball Complex, the Northern State University softball team spilt two games with Southwest Minnesota State Sunday. The Mustangs tallied a comeback victory in game one, however the Wolves rallied and secured their 20th win of the season in game two.

 

Game One

HOW IT HAPPENED

·        Southwest Minnesota State struck early, notching two runs in their first at-bats of game one

·        Makenzie Merritt answered back in the bottom of the frame, scoring Elly Smith on a double to left center

·        The Wolves then grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Smith scoring Emma Terveer and an unearned run by Rachel Reinke

·        Shelby Novotny gave the Wolves a 4-2 lead in the fourth, scoring on Emily Charchuk’s single to right

·        The Mustangs put together a crushing fifth inning, scoring six runs on five hits with three Northern State errors for the 8-4 lead

·        NSU plated two in the bottom of the frame on a double to left by Elyse Cuttic and bases loaded walk by Charchuk

·        SMSU was not finished, adding two more runs in the top of the sixth inning

·        The Wolves scored their final run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth on an infield single by Chanel Siebenthal

·        Northern recorded seven runs on 13 hits and gave up five errors defensively

·        Meghan Anderson suffered her sixth loss of the season in 4.0 innings of work

Game Two

HOW IT HAPPENED

·        The teams were scoreless through 2.5 innings of play and Makenzie Merritt put the Wolves on the board with a 2-run single up the middle in the bottom of the third

·        Elyse Cuttic singled to right in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Jessi Hernandez to give Northern a 3-0 lead

·        Southwest tallied their first run of the game in the top of the sixth, however the Wolves answered with three more in the bottom of the frame

·        Emma Terveer, Ashley Fauske, and Alexandria Arndt all singled in the sixth, scoring Chanel Siebenthal, Terveer, and Rachel Reinke

·        The Mustangs fought back in the top of the seventh, notching three runs off the Northern State starter, but the Wolves were able to close out the contest leaving one stranded

·        Elyse Cuttic tallied her tenth win of the season and the Northern State offense recorded six runs on 12 hits
