DICKINSON, ND (PlayNorthStar.com) – Mayville State scored six runs in the top of the first inning Saturday morning as the Comets staved off elimination at the NSAA Baseball Tournament.
Mayville’s first inning set the tone as the Comets rolled to a 17-4 victory over Presentation College in a loser-out game.
Mayville State (21-23) advances to play another loser-out game Sunday at 12 p.m. Presentation College ends its season with a record of 0-46. It was the final athletic contest ever for Presentation College which is closing its doors at the end of the school year.
Mayville State wasted little time taking control of Saturday’s game. The Comets started the game with four straight hits – including three straight RBI doubles – as they put up six runs in their first at bat.
Presentation College got one run back in the bottom of the third inning after Trevor Ball opened the inning with a single and later scored on an RBI single from Ethan Leech. The Comets tacked on another four runs in the fourth inning, which included RBI hits from Jared McCorrister, Kole Jessamine and Ricky Marquez.
Mayville State broke the game wide open with five more runs in the fifth inning, cruising to the 17-4 victory after seven innings.
Kaito Farquharson gave the Comets 6 1/3 innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and four runs. He walked two batters and struck out three. Ryan Froemke recorded the final two outs to finish the game.
Six different Comets had at least two hits as Mayville State tallied 17 hits in the win. Marcus Hughes was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while both Ricky Marquez and Kole Jessamine had two hits and three RBIs. Alan Larocque, Jared McCorrister and Carson Lundmark each had two hits and two RBIs.
Trevor Ball and Dawson Barson each had a pair of hits to lead the Saints offense. Ball scored a pair of runs while Barson, Ethan Leech and Evyn Booth each had an RBI.
