Secretary of State Johnson testify Thursday

PIERRE, S.D.(KBRK)- South Dakota Secretary of State Monae Johnson testified before the legislature’s Government Operations and Audit Committee Thursday. The committee issued a subpoena compelling her testimony after she repeatedly failed to show for prior meetings and answer questions about a state contract with a voter software company called “KNOWiNK.”

Voter advocacy group “SD Canvassing” had raised questions about the state’s contract with KNOWiNK, prompting calls for Johnson’s testimony.

Johnson told the committee the company is well-known and widely used for both its registration software and poll-pads or electronic poll books.

She said they’re not new to South Dakota and renewing the contract with KNOWiNK has saved the state money.

Republican committee member state Rep. Marty Overweg asked Johnson to sum up her confidence in KNOWiNK.

Johnson promised to research and provide answers to several committee questions, prompting the committee to leave the subpoena in place until she returns with those responses.
