Two Heartbreakers For PC Men’s Basketball This Weekend

Aberdeen, S.D. ( [FRI] – The Presentation College Saints drop a close game to the Bellevue University Bruins by three points on Friday. The Saints scored 55 Bruins 58. Presentation is now 5-11 and 0-4 in the NSAA on the season.

Unlike last weekend the Saints came out with intensity and scored the first two points of the game off of two free-throws from Kobe Jackson (JR/Tasmania, Australia). The Saints and Trojans battled back and forth throughout the entire first half. The biggest lead of the half for the Bruins was six but the Saints battled back and tied the game four times in the last seven minutes of the half. After twenty minutes of play the Saints and Bruins were all tied at 26 points.

The Bruins came out of the locker room and outscored the Saints six to two in the first four minutes to build a lead of four points. In the entire second half the Bruins lead never got past five points and spent much of the night within a bucket or two. The Saints fought hard all night long. In the end free-throw shooting at the end allowed the Bruins to hold on for a three point win over PC, 58-55.

By the Numbers…

The Saints had three players in double digits. Jackson Becker (JR/Aberdeen, SD) led all Saints with 13 points. Isaiah Cabrera (JR/Newark, CA) had 11 and Ontario Chapman (JR/Evanston, IL) had 10. Jackson Becker also led all Saints with six rebounds. Isaac Sumption (SO/Frederick, SD) had three steals. Isaiah Cabrera had three assists.The Saints shot 38.2% from the field, 26.7% from behind the arch and 90% from the charity stripe.


Aberdeen, S.D. ( {SAT] ­– For the second night in a row the Saints lose a close game at home to a NSAA foe. This time they lost to in state Dakota State University Trojans by two points. The final score Saints 67 Trojans 69 tonight from the Strode Center. The Saints are now 5 – 12 overall and 0-5 in the NSAA.

The Trojans got off to a quick start with a nine to run. Jackson Becker (JR/Aberdeen, SD) hit a jumper and Jeremiah Gilyard (JR/Palatka, FL) hit a three pointer to cut the lead of the Trojans down to two with just under seven minutes gone in the half. The teams kept battling back and forth with the Trojans holding a one or two possession lead until Isaac Sumption (SO/Frederick, SD) hit two free-throws to tie the game with just over six minutes remaining in the half. Travez Nyx (SR/Detroit, MI) scored the last five points for the Saints to cut the lead to two with just a minute remaining. The Trojans hit a free-throw and a jumper in the final minute of the half to take a five point lead to the locker room.

Travez Nyx and Isaac Sumption combined for five points in the first minute to tie the game early in the second half. Half way thru the second half Ontario Chapman (JR/Evanston, IL) and Travez Nyx combined to give the Saints a two point lead. Both teams did battle back and forth and with exactly eight minutes left Ontario Chapman hit a jumper to tie the game at 50. With just under two minutes left Jeremiah Gilyard hit a three to give the Saints a one point lead. The Trojans came back and hit key free-throws down the stretch and held on to a two point victory denying the Saints their first NSAA win of the season.

By the Numbers…

Travez Nyx led all Saints with 22 points. The only other Saint in double digit scoring was Jeremiah Gilyard with 16. Ontario Chapman led the Saints with five rebounds. Travez Nyx and Isaac Sumption both had three steals. Isaac Sumption and Tyrese Eugene (JR/Glendale, AZ) had two assists. The Saints shot 43.6% from the field, 25% from behind the arch and 59.1% from the free-throw line.

Next up for the Saints will be another NSAA Conference double-header next weekend. On Friday 1/20/23 they will play the Vikings of Valley City State University starting at 7:30 PM. They will wrap up their home stand in the NSAA with Dickinson State University on Saturday 1/21/23 at 5:00 PM
