ABERDEEN, SD (NSUWolves.com) – Northern State University head coach Kaden Huntrods announced the addition of three student-athletes to national letters of intent today. Katelyn Axtell (Pierre, S.D.), Jacie Flockhart (Boone, Iowa), and Guusje van Lent (Maasbommel, Netherlands) will join the Wolves in the fall of 2023.
“We are excited with our first group of 2023-24 signees,” noted Huntrods. “We have state, regional and international student-athletes that are excited and ready to compete. When we recruit, we focus on athletic and academic success that strengthens the pack, and these new Wolves do just that.”
Katelynn Axtell – Back/Breast/IM, Pierre, S.D. / T.F. Riggs HS
Katelynn Axtell in a 5-foot-10, backstroke, breaststroke, and individual medley swimmer out of T.F. Riggs High School. She holds short course personal bests of 59.86 in the 100 free, 5:43.63 in the 500 free, 11:46.76 in the 1000 free, 19:32.94 in the 1650 free, 1:04.69 in the 100 back, 2:16.42 in the 200 back, 2:45.33 in the 200 breast, and 1:06.09 in the 100 fly. Axtell is a member of the South Dakota All-Star team and is a team captain. In addition, her club program won the South Dakota State Championship. She is the daughter of Nicki and Kevin Axtell.
Huntrod’s Thoughts: “Katelyn’s club coach recommended her right away, and we love to see that kind of drive from coaches about their athletes. Since we began talking, we could tell Katelynn would be a great person on the team and we are happy to see that become a reality.”
Jacie Flockhart – 1M Dive, Boone, Iowa / Boone HS
Jacie Flockhart is a 5-foot-8 diver out of Boone High School. She was a 4-year starter and team captain for the Toreadors under the direction of Meg Otting. Flockhart was a 4-time state qualifier, 4-time all-conference recipient, conference champion, and region champion. She holds the Boone High School records in the 6 Dive and 11 Dive. Flockhart will be the first Northern State diver in over ten years. She is the daughter of Rona Crook and Trent Flockhart.
Huntrod’s Thoughts: “Jacie is an amazing person to restart and build our diving program around, she has been successful at the state and regional level in diving and the national level in trampoline. We are pumped to have her diving for us. She has scored very well during her high school career and we look forward to her soaring to even greater heights at Northern.”
Guusje van Lent – Free/Back, Maasbommel, Netherlands / Mondriaan College
Guusje van Lent is a 5-foot-11, freestyle and backstroke swimmer out of the Netherlands. She is a multiple time club and region champion in the 50 free, 100 free, 50 back, 100 back, and 50 fly. Van Lent won the region championship in the 100 free and 50 fly and ranks in the top-10 nationally in the 50 free, 50 back, and 100 back. She is the daughter of Yvonne and Leon van Lent. Van Lent will graduate with her degree in physiotherapy in the spring and join the Wolves as a graduate student next fall.
Huntrod’s Thoughts: “Guusje is a sprinter and great addition to our program; she has great experience at the international level that we are excited to bring to Northern. She is coming in with some amazing speed, that we are looking to improve upon.”
