Hemp bill to be heavily amended after talks with Governor’s office

PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – A bill legalizing the production of industrial hemp in South Dakota was discussed publicly by lawmakers for the first time Thursday in the House Ag & Natural Resources Committee.

Sponsor, Representative Lee Qualm of Platte, says the bill is being heavily amended after talks with the Governor’s office.

Representative Oren Lesmeister of Parade, another sponsor, says the amendment came as a surprise.

No vote was taken and Committee Chairman, Representative Tom Brunner (brew-ner) of Nisland says they will take it up again Tuesday.

The legislature will take a four day break this weekend and return to Pierre on Tuesday.
