PIERRE, S.D. (KCCR) – A South Dakota Department of Corrections inmate from Hughes County who left a community service work site in Yankton Jan. 3 is back in custody. Pierre Police Captain Bryan Walz explained the situation.
Walz says that lead to a nearly three and a half hour standoff with Barela.
Walz says Barela continued to refuse to exit the home which forced further action.
The standoff meant police waited outside when temperatures in Pierre hovered around five degrees Tuesday afternoon. Barela had taken a State of South Dakota pick-up when he left the Yankton area. That vehicle was recovered in Pierre. Barela is serving a 10 year sentence with four years suspended on a possession of a controlled substance charge out of Hughes County.
