Leaders reflect on gender bill

PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – The South Dakota House spent considerable time in committee and on the floor debating a bill that would prohibit medical gender procedures on children under the age of 16.

House Majority Leader, Lee Qualm of Platte says its an important issue and needs the time for consideration.

Qualm says there is potential for great harm to young people.

House Minority Leader Jamie Smith of Sioux Falls says the debate takes away time from other important issues.

Smith says bills like this are not needed.

The bill passed on the House floor and next goes to the Senate Health and Human Services Committee.
