Schools complying with mandate to display national motto

VERMILLION, S.D. (WNAX) – The South Dakota legislature this year passed a bill mandating the national motto of the United States: “In God We Trust” be displayed in each public school.

Damon Alvey, Superintendent of the Vermillion School District, says they will follow the law.

Alvey says they will answer questions and any objections as they come up.

Alvey says the issue of local control often comes up with issues like this.

The bill (SB55) says the display will be in a prominent location, easily readable and in lettering no smaller than 12 inches.
