This week is National Travel and Tourism Week

ABERDEEN, S.D. (HubCityRadio.com) – National Travel and Tourism Week is currently in progress.

Tourism plays a vital role in the South Dakota economy. The state has experienced record growth in tourism for nine straight years, according to Katlyn Richter, Global Media & Public Relations Director with the South Dakota Department of Tourism.

She said that each household would pay an extra $865 more in taxes if it was not for the revenue generated by tourism.

Casey Weismantel, Executive Director of the Aberdeen Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, said tourism also impacts jobs within the Hub City.

He said there are various events planned throughout the week, including social media contests.

Richter said it is important that local residents understand the benefits of tourism.

She said that this region of the state is a crucial part of South Dakota tourism.
