PIERRE, S.D.(DRGNews)- The US Geological Survey website now says it was a 3.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred Thursday afternoon at 2:39 pm about 24 miles north of Pierre and Fort Pierre.
Oliver Boyd is a Research Geophysicist with USGS. He told DRG News that they don’t have much earthquake monitoring equipment stationed in South Dakota.
Initially reported as a 4.0 magnitude earthquake, Boyd explains what that means as far as strength.
As far as what may have caused the earthquake.
Boyd says we may feel some aftershock.
Boyd encourages people to go to the USGS website to provide information about what they experienced.
The last earthquake reported in South Dakota happened near Wakonda in Dec. 2023. That earth quake was a 3.0 measured on the Richter scale.
