Herman, MN man identified in fatal crash near Sisseton

SISSETON, S.D.(Press Release) – A Herman, MN man has been identified as the person who died Tuesday in a two-vehicle crash north of Sisseton.

Preliminary crash information indicated that a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, traveling northbound on Interstate 29, was parked on the shoulder of the road due to a flat tire. The  driver was kneeling near the pickup on the driver’s side. A northbound 2013 Freightliner semi-truck and trailer was northbound on I-29 in the driving lane and struck the pickup and its driver.

The pickup driver, 78-year-old Gerald Bartell, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wilhelm Hiebert, 55, of Rosenfeld, Manitoba, Canada, was the truck driver. He was not injured and was wearing a seat belt. Charges are pending.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.

The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
