79th Boys State coming next week to Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The 79th Boys State is coming to Aberdeen beginning on Memorial Day.  The event has been held in Aberdeen since 1940 with the exception of WWII & 2020 because of COVID.

Boys State Director Christopher Van Delist previews what to expect.

The event is normally attended by juniors.  The last two years has also included seniors.  Van Delist explains why.

The event begins that night with a memorial service.

Elections for the various seats begins Tuesday.  The names of the parties are Federalists & Nationalists. Van DeList explains the concept behind that.

Throughout the week, there will various guest speakers appearing including both Senators Mike Rounds & John Thune, Congressman Dusty Johnson, Brown County Commissioner Mike Wiese, & Speaker Spencer Gosch.

Wiese will be speaking representing county government.  Van DeList talks about the role county government plays in South Dakota

Gosch will be speaking both Thursday & Friday dealing with the Citizen’s Forum.  Van DeList talks the importance of that group.

Governor Kristi Noem will be here on Thursday night for the Governor’s banquet.

Another group represented at Boys State is the Media Team.  Van DeList talks about the role media plays at this event.

The 79th Boys State runs from Monday May 30th through Friday June 3rd.
