ABERDEEN, S.D.(Press Release)- After receiving its world premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Canonized Club: The Curious Lives and Deaths of the Saints is returning to Wolves territory for three performances only! The Canonized Club: The Curious Lives and Deaths of the Saints was penned by playwright and producer Deena MP Ronayne, who also brought the award-winning Triple Bypass: Three 10-Minute Plays about Living for Death & Dying for Life to the Fringe in 2021 (online) and 2022 (live). This new work was commissioned by the Northern State University School of Fine Arts and is performed by its students, as part of their Summer Theatre study abroad opportunity.
It’s 1969, and an overworked Pope Paul VI has decided that the number of Catholic saints in the existing canon needs to be drastically reduced. Upheaval in the heavens abounds, as the saints pitch their case to remain in the exclusive Canonized Club, recounting the varied – and downright bizarre – events which led to their beatification.
How many of the various Saint Marys will survive? Which Saint Nicholas is the real Santa Claus? What, in heaven’s name, were snakes doing in Ireland in the first place? And will the Pope ever be left in peace to watch a whole episode of The Brady Bunch undisturbed? All is revealed in a gently irreverent comedy that will tickle your funny bone, touch your soul and lift your spirits.
Hardly Working Promotions LLC, in association with Northern State University School of Fine Arts are organizing the play.
The performances will be Friday, August 25th and Saturday, August 26th at 7:30 pm & Sunday, August 27th at 3 pm at The Johnson Fine Art Center.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and Northern Faculty and Staff. Students get in free.
