Aberdeen Police Report Shooting at YMCA Wednesday

ABERDEEN, S.D. (Press Release) – On Wednesday, at 12:17 pm, law enforcement and EMS were dispatched to the parking area of the Aberdeen YMCA in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, law enforcement located a male with an apparent gunshot wound. Life saving measures were attempted and the individual was transported to a local hospital where the victim died from his injuries.
The individual who is believed to have fired the gunshot was on scene when law enforcement arrived. This individual is currently detained by law enforcement.
The investigation is in the very early stages and is ongoing. This appears to be an isolated incident and was unrelated to the YMCA.
Out of an abundance of caution, the Avera St. Lukes Hospital campus was put on lockdown, due to the close proximity to the incident.
Several agencies responded to the incident. They include the Aberdeen Police Department, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the South Dakota DCI, Brown County Emergency Management, and Aberdeen Fire & Rescue.
