PIERRE, S.D.(SDBA)- The South Dakota Senate Commerce & Energy Committee unanimously passed SB 35. It would give lottery winners the right to consent or not to have their name and likeness used in promotional materials following a significant lottery win.
The sponsor, Republican Sen. Brent Hoffman from Hartford, said South Dakota is supposed to be one of the freest states in the nation. However, he says South Dakota does not allow lottery winners to choose if they wish to consent to Lottery Commission marketing efforts concerning their jackpot.
Republican Rep. John Mills from Brookings supported the measure.
The measure passed 9 to 0 and goes on the Senate’s consent calendar.
