Wolves Put Together Solid Effort in Brookings (T&F)

Brookings, SD (NSUWolves.com) [Day 1]– Northern State University track and field traveled to SDSU to compete in day one of the D2/NAIA Open. The men’s team is sitting in fifth place with 12 points and the women’s team is in second with 24 points.

MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

  • The men’s 4x800m relay broke the school record with a time of 7:52.54 with the athletes of Josh MartinRicky BerndtDylan Schimke, and Dalton Fleckenstein.
  • Drew Henriksen placed first in the 300m hurdles in 39.69 seconds
  • The heptathlon standings after four events have Birnir Vagn Finnsson in second with 2,806 points, Isaac Ligon in fifth place with 2,428 points, and Sean Juengst in sixth place with 2,157 points.

WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

  • In the Women’s pentathlon Morgan Sheldon finished second with 3,067 points and marks of 9.31 in the 60 hurdles, 1.51m in the high jump, 10.07m in the shot put, 4.73 for long jump, and 2:40.43 in the 800m
  • Karli Klein finished fourth in the pentathlon with 2,739 points and a marks of 9.56 (60 hurdles), 1.42m(high jump), 9.53m (shot put), 3.93m (long jump), and 2:36.14 (800m)
  • Tayla Dobrenski was eighth with 2,634 points and marks of 9.83 (60 hurdles), 1.54m(high jump), 9.10m (shot put), 4.45m (long jump), and 3:03.11 (800m)
  • Jordan West was tenth with 2,424 points and marks of 10.78 (60 hurdles), 1.42m(high jump), 8.84m (shot put), 4.34m (long jump), and 2:48.95 (800m
  • Megan Pickering won with the 5000m with a time of 17:40.97 defeating the runner up by 40 seconds

BEYOND THE RESULTS

  • The previous record for the 4x800m was set in 2018 by alumni Itoiz Rodriguez, Donovan Miller, Adam Leach, and Jacob Schweitzer with a time of 7:57.46

Brookings, SD (NSUWolves.com) [Day 2] – Northern State University track and field competed for the second day in a row at the SDSU D2 Open Meet. The men’s team finished in second place with 115.5 team points and the women’s team finished in fourth with 67 total points.

MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

  • Birnir Vagn Finnsson finished in second place with 4,838 points for the heptathlon; his marks were 7.10 (60m), 6.61m (long jump), 10.76m (shot put), 1.89m (high jump), 8.69 (60m hurdles) 4.05m (pole vault), and 3:08.34 (1000m)
  • In fourth place for the heptathlon was Isaac Ligon with 4,451 points; his marks were 7.25 (60m), 5.91m (long jump), 9.62m (shot put), 1.77m (high jump), 8.96 (60m hurdles), 4.15m (pole vault), and 3:05.80 (1000m)
  • Sean Juengst was the last athlete to compete in the heptathlon for Northern; He placed sixth with 3,836 points and individual marks of 7.88 (60m), 5.51 (long jump), 10.27 (shot put), 1.74m (high jump), 10.20 (60m hurdles), 3.65m (pole vault), and 3:01.16 (1000m)
  • Nick Olson out threw the competition to win first place for the Wolves in the weight throw with a toss of 17.70m
  • Treyson Schulz finished in seventh place for the long jump with a length of 6.45m; He also competed in the triple jump in which he placed third with a distance of 12.72m
  • Vance Borchers jumped a height of 1.90m in the high jump and placed fourth
  • The mile included Josh Martin in second place, Nathan Alto in fifth, and Ricky Berndt in ninth place with times of 4:13.56, 4:17.95, and 4:25.67
  • Dylan Schimke finished fourth in the 600m crossing the line in 1:22.73 and Carter Dingman was tenth with 1:24.39
  • Joel Matehs took third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.21
  • Chris Weber ran the 60m dash in 6.99 seconds that earned a fourth place finish
  • Sam Tremelling won the pole vault event with a height of 4.80m Noah Ford placed fourth with 4.50m
  • Seth Martens and Drew Salfrank ran the 400m dash. Martins placed sixth in 49.42 and Salfrank placed ninth in 49.90
  • Nick Olson earned a sixth place finish in the shot put with a distance of 14.36m and Ethan Barnett threw 14.03m for an eighth place finish
  • The 3000m run featured Nathan Alto and Evan Halbe with second and tenth place finishes with times of 8:46.82 and 9:12.12
  • Men’s 4x400m relay broke the school record and placed first with a time of 3:19.23 featuring athletes Drew SalfrankJoel MatehsCarter Dingman, and Seth Martens

WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

  • The women’s pole vault included Bekah Walz and Gracie Eisenbraun, they placed third and ninth with a height of 3.50m and 2.90m
  • Megan Pickering broke the one-mile record and placed second crossing the finish line in 5:05.71; Avery Murray finished in eighth place with a time of 5:32.28
  • Sprinters Kyanna Collymore and Vanessa Christiansen ran the 400m with times of 59.01 and 1:00.61. Collymore placed third and Christensen was ninth
  • Emily BreskeJordan Tschumperlin, and Morgan Sheldon placed third, fifth, and ninth with marks of 1.60m, 1.55m, and 1.55m in the high jump
  • Cassidy Gough placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 16.24m
  • In the 800m Avery Miles finished with a time of 2:24.29 and placed ninth
  • Avery Murray and Jordan Hermansen raced the 1000m placing seventh and tenth with 3:14.93 and 3:30.85 respectively
  • Jenna Helms ran the 3000m in 11:34.30 and placed ninth
  • The Wolves 4x400m relay placed fourth in a time of 4:04.34 which included Kyanna CollymoreAlli JacksonEmma Hunt, and Vanessa Christensen

BEYOND THE RESULTS

  • The previous record for the one mile was 5:07.34 and set back in 1984 by Lenae Reinschmidt
  • The men’s 4x400m relay record was set back in 2010 by Luke Hauert, Ryan Conrad, Montrel Richardson, and Bill Cameron with a time of 3:19.95
  • Sam Tremelling hit the provisional mark in pole vault with his mark of 4.80m, ranking him 30th in the nation
  • Birnir Vagn Finnsson hit the provisional mark with his score of 4,838 in the heptathlon which ranks him 21st in the nation

Wolves will travel to Fargo to compete in the NDSU Bison Open on February 2nd and 3rd. The meet will start at 12:00 p.m. on Friday and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
