ABERDEEN, S.D.(AberdeenInsider)- A former South Dakota legislator, Brown County commissioner and Aberdeen teacher and coach has died.
Burton “Burt” Elliott, 76, of Aberdeen died Saturday, Jan. 27. Funeral arrangements are pending with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.
Elliott served in the South Dakota House Representatives from 2001 through 2008. His wife, Elaine, was a state representative from 2009 through 2012.
After serving in Pierre, Burt Elliott was elected to a four-year term on the Brown County Commission.
A graduate of Pierre High School and Northern State University, Elliott started teaching at Central High School in 1970. He was assistant debate coach for a year before he started coaching tennis, which he did for 35 years. For a time, he coached both the boys and girls teams.
In 2005, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the South Dakota Tennis Hall of Fame. The annual Elliott Extravaganza tennis tournament, hosted by Central High School, is named in his honor.
Elliott retired as a tennis coach in 2005, but continued teaching social studies, history, government and geography at Central through 2007. He is a member of the Aberdeen Central High School Hall of Fame.
