PIERRE, S.D.(Press Release)- Secretary of State Monae L. Johnson would like to provide an update regarding the 2024 candidate filing period in South Dakota.
South Dakota’s 2024 candidate filing period began on January 1st. Starting on that day, candidates could begin circulating their nominating petitions and filing them with the Secretary of State’s Office and county auditors’ offices. All nominating petitions must be filed by March 26th for those seeking to participate in the June 4th Primary Election. April 30th is the deadline for independent candidates to file for the November 5th General Election.
Secretary Johnson would also like to remind candidates that they must also file a Statement of Organization within 15 days of becoming a candidate and a Financial Interest Statement within 15 days of filing their nominating petition.
There are a variety of offices up for election in 2024, such as U.S. Representative, 105 State Legislators, County Commissioners, etc. A full list of the offices that are up for election can be found on the Secretary of State’s website: https://sdsos.gov/elections-voting/upcoming-elections/general-information/2024/2024-offices-to-be-filled.aspx.
Signature requirements for those seeking to participate in the June 4th Primary election are established by SDCL § 12-6-7, while signature requirements for independent candidates are established in SDCL § 12-7-1.
