RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA News) – The Rapid City Police Department had a busy weekend which included a pair of weapons calls. The first call shortly after 9 o’clock Saturday (07/27/19) morning at 13-04 Atlas Street. Police found shell casings in two different spots within the parking lot. Witnesses told police that a white SUV and a gold car were both involved in the shooting.
RCPD says that Jezic Returns From Scout of Rapid City exited a white SUV and fired one round into the gold passenger car. Police say the owner of the car Dwight Mesteth of Rapid City returned fire at the SUV with several rounds. Both vehicles were searched after the incident in different areas of Rapid City. Police say they recovered both handguns believed to be involved in the shooting.
Mesteth was placed under arrest for three counts of Aggravated Assault. Returns From Scout was placed under arrest for Aggravated Assault and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Both were transported to the Pennington County Jail. No one was injured in the gunfire.
The RCPD got a second weapons call this one happening Sunday (7/28) just before 4 in the afternoon. Police responded to the 700 block of Flormann Street for reports of a gunshot heard in the area. Witnesses told police said they saw a man running on foot who was being chased by a Ford F-150 pickup and hearing a gunshot come from the area of the runner and the F-150. A witness provided the pickup’s license plate number, and police say the pickup was registered to Eric Gonzales.
Police say they pulled Gonzales over near his residence on Indiana Street just before 5 in the afternoon. Police say the found a loaded pistol in the pickup, with ammunition matching that of the spent shell casing recovered from the scene of the original reported shooting. Witnesses to the earlier shooting positively identified Gonzales as the driver/shooter involved.
Gonzales was placed under arrest for Reckless Discharge of a Firearm. Police do not know who the second person involved in the shooting is… however, police continue to investigate.
