STURGIS, S.D.(KBHB) – The Sturgis City Council approved a new co-host agreement with AMA Pro Racing that will bring a flat track race to downtown Sturgis on the final day of this year’s Rally.
The council discussed the new contract and asked for public comment before holding an executive session where they worked on the details of the contract.
Ward 3 Alderman Jim Thompson applauded the work racing officials have done to appease the initial reason for city residents turning down the first contract – the cost to the city of Sturgis.
The new proposal involves no financial risk to the city of Sturgis and Cameron Gray of AMA Pro Racing says it’s a win-win for the city.
The new proposal also includes a new, shorter race route, which Gray says adds to the possibilities.
The city was asked to consider the new contract last night because racing officials say the Fox Television Network needed an answer by the end of May.
The Fox Network will tape the race on August 11 and air it the following Saturday in prime time.
