SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- It’s an all-out effort to reduce infant mortality in South Dakota.
The Avera Research Institute has received a five-year, 5.4-million dollar grant through the Healthy Start Initiative.
Project Director Dr. Lacey McCormack calls it a multi-pronged approach that goes beyond clinical treatment.
McCormack says rural areas present a difficult challenge, but the research team will also work on problems in urban areas.
McCormack says something as simple as a gas card can make a big difference for expectant mothers and their unborn children.
McCormack says the project will provide services that encourage healthy living during pregnancy and continued support after childbirth.
