SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELOLAND) — A 30-year-old Sioux Falls man is in the Minnehaha County Jail facing three counts of first-degree murder charges in Lincoln County from an early morning shooting Saturday in southwest Sioux Falls.

According to Sioux Falls Police Lt. Aaron Nyberg, the shooting suspect, Justin Cody Rackley, was arrested Saturday after officers found three people dead from gunshot wounds.  The shooting happened at a home near the intersection of South Drexel Drive and 58th Street.

“It was very chaotic for the officers,” Nyberg said. “We were out there until into the evening hours Saturday processing the scene.”

Police announced the three victims as Daniel Carl Kemnitz, 43, Kellie Elizabeth Reaves, 43, and Michael Andrew Thompson, 34.

Nyberg said police found a handgun at the scene and police are still determining how many shots were fired. Two additional people were hurt in addition to the three dead from gunshot wounds.

Police said people were drinking at a “bonfire” type gathering, but don’t believe drugs were involved.

The last time there were three or more victims in a Sioux Falls homicide was in 1973, police said.

Police continue to interview people who may have attended the gathering and collecting evidence from the scene. Nyberg said there’s still a lot of work to be done on the investigation.

Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum said the professionalism of the SFPD was on display during the investigation.

“Our condolences go to the families who lost loved ones,” Thum said. “Great work by our team responding to chaotic situation.”

On Saturday, people who live nearby told KELOLAND News were alarmed when they woke up to find a heavy police presence in their neighborhood.

“And they had the street blocked off at 57th and Drexel and then at 58th Street. And I was just curious, tape everywhere and (I have) no clue what was going on,” Tamara Schroeder, who lives in the area, said.

“I mean, there’s been, like, break-ins. My truck was stolen a couple of years ago out of my driveway, but, I mean, not like three murders,” Joe Linneweber, who also lives in the area, said.
