PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- Hughes County is seeing savings because of an effort to keep youth in trouble with the law out of the corrections system.  Hughes County Commissioners signed off last week on two grant applications for the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative or J-D-A-I.  Youth Diversion Coordinator Lacey Boxley says the county is nearing the end of window for supporting the program through grants.

States Attorney Casey Jo Deibert says the savings on court-appointed attorney fees are adding up.

Boxley says that holds true for the juvenile diversions.

Commission chair Tom Rounds applauded the efforts of Deibert and Boxley.

The second J-A-D-I grant approved by the Commission will help the county address any racial and ethnic disparities.  The county should know if they are awarded the grants in about a month.
