ABERDEEN, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – Back in the late 90’s there was a Nike commercial that said, “Chicks dig the long ball” well, apparently the Aberdeen Smittys subscribe to that mentality – or at least did yesterday at Fossum Field.

In another doubleheader sweep, this time against Brookings Post 74, the Smittys drilled three homeruns, en route to a 10-8 game one win + hung on late for a 6-5 victory in game two.

Starting pitcher Zane Backous ate up the first five innings of ball & struck out four and scattered four hits and four earned runs over his outing. He even helped us cause at the plate, going 2-3 with a pair of runs scored & driven in + a HR. Offensively, he got a lot of other support; Grant Beyer was also 2-3 with two runs scored and he, too, played longball & drove in three. The other homerun of the day went to Brendan Livermont, another 2-3 stat line with two runs scored and those two runs driven in.

In game two, starting hurler Jackson Welke delivered a solid & almost complete game; going six and third innings and scattering eight hits and three earned runs, while also fanning one Post 74 batter. With the Smittys leading 6-2 going into the final inning, Brookings Post 74 mounted a comeback. With Welke’s day on the hill done, Lance Siefken came in, in relief, but struggled to find the strike zone consistently and walked four, including walking the bases loaded three times.

Head Coach Nathan Gonnelly turned to the bullpen and Donnie Soderlund. In a high pressure situation, Soderlund came in with the bases loaded and calmly struck out Jase Bauer to win the game, 6-5 & earn the save in the process.

Phillip Zens was 1-2 with two runs scored & driven in. Brendan Livermont also drove in two and went 1-2 at the plate.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Smittys up their record to 20-5 on the season and are back in action today against Pierre at five & seven tonight, in the capital city.
