SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- He started off pursuing a major in engineering.

Now, he’s on his way to help solve the problem of the nursing shortage in rural America.

Dalten Bremer of Ocheydan, Iowa says he feels called to rural areas like his hometown.

Bremer just completed a summer of work at Avera’s Regional Health Center in Freeman.

It’s part of a federal program aimed at filling the gap.

Bremer says the experience at the Freeman Health Center was invaluable.

School and state officials are hoping students will stay in South Dakota for their careers.

Bremer transferred to USD for the nursing program…but has his sites set on going back home.

He’ll receive 15-thousand dollars for committing to work in the Avera System for at least three years.
