MILBANK, S.D.(KXLG)- Milbank will hold a unique fundraiser for Special Olympics of South Dakota this Sunday, August 18.
The Special Olympics Heroes Pull will feature 10-person teams pulling a full-sized fire truck down Main Street in Milbank. A tournament bracket will match two teams each pulling the fire truck 45 feet with a rope attached to the truck. The team with the fastest time will advance to the next round.
So far, 19 10-person teams have registered for the event, a number that surprised Abbey Trapp, one of the organizers.
Each team pays a $500 entry fee. Half of the proceeds from the event will go to Special Olympics of South Dakota, while the other half will stay with the local Special Olympics organization. Trapp said splitting the money with the state Special Olympics directly benefits local Special Olympics athletes.
Trapp said the town is excited about the Heroes Pull, and she hopes it will become an annual event.
The winning team will receive a large traveling trophy with medals going to each of the team members.
The event starts are 4 p.m. on Main Street. The 100 and 200 blocks of Main will be closed off for the pull. Spectators can enjoy a food truck and an ice cream truck during the event. Organizers also plan to have some first-response vehicles on display for spectators to check out.
Teams are still welcome to register for the Heroes Pull. Just be at the starting line at 3 p.m. on the day of the event.
