Candidates for District 1 & 3 House seats discuss eminent domain

ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The South Dakota Farmers Union hosted a candidate forum at the Brown County Fair Saturday.  Candidates representing South Dakota House seats for Districts 1 & 3 attended.  One of the topics brought up was the issue of eminent domain.

District 3 Representative Brandei Schaefbauer discuss the CO2 shouldn’t be consider a commodity.

District 3 candidate Erin Rudner believes this is an issue that can have bipartisan support from Republicans & Democrats.

District 1 candidate Christopher Reder explains how Minnesota has used the issue of eminent domain.

District 1 candidate Steven McCleerey believes this is a topic that needs to be addressed separately.

Candidates were also asked if they would author bills to address the issue of eminent domain.

Representative Schaefbauer said she wouldn’t for now but talked about the process of how bills go through the process.

District 3 candidate, Senator Al Novstrup, District 1 candidates Logan Manhart & Mark Sumption gave quick takes on that idea.(Voices heard in order Manhart, Novstrup, Sumption)

District 1 candidate Steven McCleerey will focus on drafting bills to address property rights.

District 1 candidate Christopher Reder discuss looking to put HB1219(no eminent domain for CO2 pipeline) back on the agenda during the 2025 session.

Expect eminent domain to be a main topic coming up during the 2025 session.
