Report of gunfire leads to standoff in Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D.(Press Release)- On Tuesday shortly after midnight, Aberdeen police officers responded to a report of a gunshot in the back yard of a residence located the 1700 blk of 9th Ave SW.
Responding officers contained the area and began communications with a person who was upset. Other occupants of the home were able to safely leave.
The Aberdeen Special Response Team responded, and negotiators communicated with the subject for several hours.
Residents in the area were contacted and asked to evacuate or shelter in place while officers worked to resolve the incident. Thankfully, the call ended peacefully when the subject agreed to come out of the house.
The person was arrested and taken to the Brown County Jail. At this time, charges include the reckless discharge of a firearm. Officers served a search warrant on the home and a handgun was taken as evidence. Based on our initial investigation, we do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.
The Aberdeen Police Department continues to investigate the incident. Agencies that responded to this incident included the Aberdeen Police Department and the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.
