Legislators receive reports on state penitentiary & Department of Revenue

PIERRE, S.D.(KELO)- South Dakota Legislators were given a more complete picture on the recent lockdown at the state penitentiary.

Corrections Secretary Kelly Wasko appeared before the Legislature’s Government Operations and Audit Committee this morning.

She says correctional officers removed all kinds of contraband from penitentiary facilities over a two-week period at the end of September.

He’d like to talk about the cases of alleged fraud in the Department of Revenue…but says his hands are tied.

Revenue Secretary Mike Howdyshell appeared before the Legislature’s Government Operations and Audit Committee early this afternoon.

He says procedures have been changed and controls to prevent fraud are in place.

But, Howdyshell says, he can’t say much about the fraud cases because they’re still under investigation.
