PIERRE, S.D.(DRGNews)- Temperatures outside are cooling down, which means heating systems are being turned on across the region.

Pierre Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ian (eye-un) Paul says being proactive about home heating safety can save lives and one way to be proactive is by checking all of your smoke detectors.

Paul also advises people to be sure their carbon monoxide detectors are working.

Paul says if space heaters and fireplaces aren’t being used properly, it can lead to dangerous situations, including fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Key Safety Tips:

• Install CO Detectors: Place carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas and on every level of your home. Test alarms monthly and change batteries at least once a year.
• Regular Maintenance: Schedule annual inspections for heating systems and chimneys to ensure they are functioning correctly and safely.
• Use Heaters Safely: Keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials, and never leave them unattended while in use.
• Ventilation: Ensure that all fuel-burning appliances are properly ventilated to the outside to prevent CO buildup.
• Know the Symptoms: Be aware of CO poisoning symptoms, which include headache, dizziness, confusion, and nausea. If you suspect CO poisoning, leave the area immediately and call emergency services.
