ABERDEEN, S.D.(Press Release) – Northern State University, along with the City of Aberdeen and Brown County, is proud to recognize Free Speech Week from Oct. 21 to Oct. 27 with a formal proclamation. This national event highlights the importance of free speech and a free press, which are both protected by First Amendment of the US Constitution. Northern, the Aberdeen community, and Brown County has come together in joining other communities across the country in encouraging awareness of this freedom.

Free Speech Week is a national, nonpartisan event that highlights the importance of free speech, and the free press as outlined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. This year’s proclamation underscores the historical significance of the Constitution, adopted in 1787, and the Bill of Rights, ratified in 1791, which guarantee individual freedoms for all Americans.

“Free speech is essential for a free society and a vibrant campus community that empowers all individuals to express their ideas, fostering an environment of open dialogue and mutual respect,” said Sean Blackburn, dean of students. “We are honored to have the support of our local leaders in celebrating Free Speech Week.”

Senator Mike Rohl, Representative Brandei Schaefbauer, Senator-Elect Carl Perry, Brown County Commission Chair Duane Sutton, and Mayor Travis Schaunaman joined campus leaders in recognizing the significance of this week.

Throughout the week, students, faculty, staff, and local residents are encouraged to reflect on the importance of free speech in both personal and public spheres. Northern State University invites the entire campus and local community to participate in celebrating Free Speech Week. This week is an opportunity for individuals to not only celebrate their rights but also to better understand the importance of free speech and a free press.
