Watertown City Council address City Manager post

WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- The Watertown City Council convened a special executive session Monday night at the Watertown Police Department for what was listed under the regular agenda as a “personnel discussion.”

The council immediately entered the “personnel matter” executive session, and the meeting proceeded for over three hours.

Following the session, it was announced that the Council voted to make City Manager Amanda Mack’s already submitted resignation effective immediately.

Amanda Mack, who made history as Watertown’s first-ever city manager, resigned earlier this month. She planned to leave her position on January 6, 2025, to accept a similar role in Harrisburg, South Dakota. However, the City Council’s decision has advanced her departure.

Mack’s tenure in Watertown began in May 2021, and she has overseen several significant projects, including the completion of the new airport terminal, the Prairie Lakes Ice Arena, and the Community Foundation Plaza.

The City Council or Mayor has yet to provide further details on the reasons behind the action. The search for her successor is expected to commence promptly. Mayor Ried Holien announced a City Manager Succession Committee to help in the recruitment process, which included members Robb Peterson, Joy Nelson, Scott Munger, Chris Carter, Liam Culhane, and Amber Dahl (as a consultant).

The interim City Manager will be current Chief Financial Officer Kristen Bobzien.
