South Dakota House defeated HB1054(Chaplain in schools)

PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The South Dakota House debated Wednesday on HB1054.  The bill allow public schools to authorize an individual to volunteer or be employed as a school chaplain.

Prime sponsor was Representative Al Novstrup who talks about what the bill does.

Novstrup talks about what some things chaplains have done in the state.

Novstrup reminds the legislature that this bill doesn’t take away local control of what school boards can do.

Speaking on the floor in favor of it was Representative Logan Manhart of Aberdeen.

Representative Brandei Schaefbauer of Aberdeen inform the legislature that this bill is not about religion but what’s good for the students.

Among the opposition on the floor speaking include Representative Mike Stevens of Yankton who said that school boards already has the option to do this.

Representative Erin Healy of Sioux Falls spoke about what’s best for the children should be decided by the parents.

Representative Melissa Heerman of Brookings is concern about how school boards can hire chaplains based solely on a specific religion.

South Dakota defeated the bill on a 49-18 vote.
