WATERTOWN, S.D.(KWAT)- No surprises in the National Weather Service’s first spring flood outlook released this week.
Below normal snowfall amounts have left area rivers, including the Big Sioux River, with a below normal risk of flooding in the 90 day outlook that runs through the end of April.
Soil moisture is below normal across the entire area.
The weather service says the entire region is in Moderate to Severe drought conditions.
Frost depths are deeper than normal, ranging in the 2 to 4 foot range. A deeper frost depth could mean slower absorption of any snow melt or rain, which could factor into flooding if either were to occur in a rapid fashion.
