Elizabeth Jean Sahli was born September 30, 1940, to Kasper and Julia (Gabriel) Sahli in Roscoe, SD.  She grew up working at the family grocery store.  Jean graduated from Roscoe High School in 1959 and continued to work for her father and brother at the family grocery store.

On October 1, 1963, Jean was united in marriage to Alvin Schmitt in Roscoe, SD.  Together they were blessed with one son Tim on December 22, 1964.

Jean worked as a cook at the school in Roscoe for seven years until 1983 when she and Alvin opened Schmitty’s Self-Serve gas station.  Jean enjoyed visiting with all the customers she met over the years.  In 1991, Jean and Alvin retired after they sold the gas station and fuel truck business.

Jean was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  Her greatest joys were her two grandsons Austin and Brady. She loved spending time with them and watching them play football and baseball.

In 2024, Jean finally got her wish and became a great-grandmother to Little Miss Addison.   She loved getting pictures and videos to share with all her friends.

Jean was a member of the Commercial Club and American Legion Auxiliary in Roscoe.  She was also a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir.

In 2016, Jean and Alvin moved from Roscoe to Rapid City.  They left behind many great friends and a lifetime of wonderful memories so they could be closer to Tim and his family.   In Rapid, they lived and became members at Good Samaritan Society St. Martin Village.   Jean enjoyed everyone from the amazing residents to the kitchen staff, maintenance workers, and the people who manage the facilities. She told Tim many times that she loved where she lived.  She loved getting together with her lady friends to go shopping, drink wine and just visit.  Her friends were family.

Elizabeth Jean Schmitt passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025, at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital surrounded by her family at age 84.

Jean is survived by her son Tim (Donna) Schmitt of Rapid City; grandsons Austin (Brittany) Schmitt of Gilbert, Arizona and Brady Schmitt of Rapid City, SD; great-granddaughter Addison Bryar Schmitt of Gilbert, Arizona and many nieces and nephews.
