ABERDEEN, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – The Aberdeen Smittys were swept on Saturday & then did the sweeping on Mother’s Day.

On Saturday, the Smittys dropped a pair of games to the O’Gorman squad, losing 8-5 in game one & then a non-competitive 11-1 game in the second affair.

Sunday, a different story. Aberdeen & Huron played two very competitive games in the heat & strong winds at Fossum Field & the Smittys would find a way to win both contests.

In the first of two games, the Smittys & Tigers battled back & forth, but the Smittys delivered a knockout punch in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating five, en route to an 8-5 Aberdeen triumph. At the plate, Grant Beyer went 2-4 with a run scored + 2RBI. Jehiel Aviles was 3-4 with a pair of runs scored & he knocked in two. Jaxon Ladner also plated two and went 2-4.

In game two, Aberdeen got some good fortune from the Huron defense. The Tigers erred seven times in the field and the Smittys would make them pay, winning 9-6.

The Smittys and Tigers both had to battle high heat & strong winds and both teams used many bodies. Head Coach Nathan Gonnelly used four pitchers, and Donnie Soderlund & Brayden Bowman came in late and locked things down. Bowman in particular went the final two innings and only surrendered one hit. Branson Peterson earned the win, going three innings, scattering five hits, a pair of runs, while striking out four.

Following the win, Head Coach Nathan Gonnelly visited with Ryan Martin, “The boys did a heck of a job today, it took everybody to succeed. When had (different) pitchers going in (different) base runners going in, a lot of changes defensively, we executed small ball…we were just on our game today.”

The Aberdeen Smittys return home to Fossum Field on Wednesday for a single nine inning game against Lake Norden at 6pm. Ryan Martin will provide the play-by-play via HubCityRadio.com & the Fox Sports Aberdeen Youtube page, courtesy of Culvers of Aberdeen.
