PIERRE, S.D.(Press Release) – The South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry is pleased to announce the appointment of Ryan Budmayr as its new President and CEO. Budmayr will succeed David Owen, who is retiring after a distinguished tenure leading the organization.

“David has led this organization for more than a quarter of a century with impressive skill and vision, leaving an indelible mark on South Dakota’s business community,” said Michael Bender, Chairman of the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry. “We are thrilled to welcome Ryan, well-respected across the state and his extensive experience and deep ties to South Dakota make him the ideal leader to build on David’s legacy and guide us into the future.”

Budmayr brings an impressive amount of experience in business, public affairs, and strategic communications. A lifelong South Dakotan with deep roots in both the private and public sectors, Budmayr has earned a strong reputation for building relationships across industries, understanding complex policy, and championing economic development throughout the state. His background positions him uniquely to lead the Chamber into its next era of advocacy, growth, and influence.

“David’s impact on the South Dakota business community is unmatched, and I’m humbled to follow in his footsteps,” said Ryan Budmayr. “Businesses are the backbone of South Dakota’s success and it’s more important than ever that they have a strong voice and a seat at the table. I look forward to working with our members, elected leaders, and communities to ensure this state remains the best place in the country to live, work, and grow a business.”

David Owen has served as President since November 1998, guiding the Chamber through 27 legislative sessions as its chief lobbyist and leading nine statewide ballot measure campaigns. His strategic leadership and dedication have been instrumental in addressing critical issues impacting South Dakota’s economy. Under Owen’s stewardship, the Chamber solidified its role as a leading advocate for businesses across the state, fostering economic growth and prosperity.

Reflecting on his tenure, David Owen shared, “It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve South Dakota’s business community, elected public officials and professional public servants to solve challenging problems. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together, and I have full confidence that Ryan will bring energy, insight, and passion to this role. The Chamber is in great hands.”

Ryan’s transition into his new role is anticipated to occur at the beginning of August, ensuring a seamless handover of leadership. The South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry remains committed to its mission of advocating for businesses and promoting a thriving economic environment throughout the state.
