Ardyth June Baumann was born August 14, 1934, to Emanuel B. and Myrtle (Anderson) Baumann in Lowry, SD. She grew up on the family farm where she helped with the cows, goats, pigs and chickens they raised. She loved horses, especially the black horse she trained, Beauty. As a child she would play in the mud flats with her siblings and helped cut ice blocks in the winter for their ice house. Her grandmother Nettie Anderson lived on the farm so Ardyth became very close to her. Ardyth attended country school and the children took a horse drawn buggy to school. In the winter, they would let the horse go and it knew to take them to school and even knew to stop at the highway so they could check for traffic. If they were running late for school, Ardyth’s sister Ardell would get out and ride the horse to hurry it along. When Ardyth was 10 years old, they moved into Selby, SD. She finished school there, graduating from Selby High School in 1952.
In September 1952, Ardyth was united in marriage to Roger W. Peterson in Selby. They moved to Milbank, SD, where they raised their family. Ardyth was active in her children’s activities and was a den mother for the Cub Scouts, led the local 4-H, and was a Brownie Scout Leader. Ardyth worked as a clerk at Bill’s Super Valu and later Coast to Coast. She also volunteered at the Thrift Store for many years. Roger passed away on October 27, 2000. In 2006 Ardyth moved back to Selby, to the house she was raised in.
Ardyth was an active member of the Parkview United Methodist Church in Milbank and was a member of the Selby United Methodist Church. She sang in the church choir almost all of her life. Ardyth enjoyed quilting and doing counted cross stitch. She loved doing the laundry and was very particular about it. The Johnny Carson Show was a favorite of hers to watch on television. She always had a huge vegetable garden and beautiful flower gardens. Her grandchildren were very special to Ardyth and she loved spending time with them.
