PIERRE, S.D.(KELO)- South Dakota lawmakers are studying ways to meet the needs of intellectually disabled residents.

A summer study committee met for the first time Wednesday, and gave organizations that provide services a week to recommend their best ideas to the committee.

Co-Chair Senator Chris Karr of Sioux Falls says the challenge is covering all the bases with the limited resources available.

Dan Cross, the executive director of a group that represents providers, says there’s already a shortage of funding to cover all the expenses of community support programs like LifeScape and DakotaAbilities, who provide the services.
