ABERDEEN, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – Although the 4th of July was last week, the fireworks were on display on a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon from Fossum Field; the Aberdeen Smittys & SF Post 15 East squad would combine for 45 runs over the course of the Tuesday twinbill. Aberdeen took game one in a 15-9 shootout win & Sioux Falls returned the favor, taking game two from the Smittys, 18-3 in a five inning affair.

In game one, even though Sioux Falls would get off to a 2-0 start after the top of the first, the Smittys offense would explode to the tune of putting up a crooked nine spot to take a 9-2 advantage. Aberdeen would lead for the duration of the game, although Sioux Falls would chip away and make the game interesting. They would get as close as a 10-9 deficit in the fourth, but Aberdeen added three insurance runs in the fifth & two more in the sixth.

Bennett Eisenbeisz took his knuckleball to work & picked up the win on the hill; he’d go three innings and scatter five hits, four runs, three of them earned and a pair of walks. But the story of the game would be the offense. Lance Siefken went 2-4 with a run scored & four runs batted in. Jehiel Aviles was 1-3 with a pair of runs scored & he, too, drove in four. Six other Smittys players had a least one RBI in the six run victory.

Game two wasn’t as kind to the host squad; Post 15 picked up the 18-3 run rule victory in five innings. The visitors struck for 10 runs in the second inning and never looked back. Karson Borge took the loss, he went an inning and a third and surrendered four hits, seven runs, six of them earned and a pair of walks. The Smittys were out-hit in game two, 11-3 and committed four errors in the field.

Following the doubleheader, head coach Nathan Gonnelly shared his thoughts, “We played well in game one, we got guys in scoring position, executed bunts & hits and run – we didn’t lay down, there were moments where (Sioux Falls) crawled back but (we) had great resilience. In game two, that’s what happens when we’re not consistent…we need some consistency, come regions & state we need to put two and three games together.”

The Smittys will travel east to the Gopher Classic this upcoming weekend for four games, schedule pending.
